Wildlife Victoria is responding to reports of suspected H5 bird flu directly via its Emergency Response Service and for cases of live birds reported via Agriculture Victoria.
Wildlife Victoria volunteers are being deployed to suspected cases across the state using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and following established response protocols. Volunteers will transport affected wildlife to a veterinary clinic for assessment, treatment when possible, or humane euthanasia to prevent further suffering.
Wildlife Victoria’s veterinary team is also ready to be deployed to areas of high impact. To date, the team has been stationed at Portland, Mallacoota, and Lakes Entrance, bringing their extensive wildlife expertise and experience to support the local communities, veterinary clinics, and hardworking volunteers.
Wildlife Victoria’s H5 response has been made possible by State Government funding.
The funding will also bolster Wildlife Victoria’s 24/7 Emergency Response Service, helping ensure the phone line is adequately staffed to receive calls from members of the public and referrals from the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline.
What to do if you suspect H5 bird flu
If you encounter a native animal suspected of having H5 bird flu, avoid and do not handle the animal. Record the location and what you observe and report it online at agriculture.vic.gov.au/birdflu or call our 24/7 Emergency Response Service on 03 8400 7300.
