Recycle For Wildlife

September 24th, 2024

It's spring-cleaning time!

If you didn't know, Wildlife Victoria is a donation partner for Victoria's Container Deposit Scheme. This scheme allows you to recycle selected aluminum, glass or plastic containers and donate the funds earned to a non-profit organisation of your choice.  As the weather warms, if you’re enjoying a refreshing drink in the sunshine, why not donate your cans or bottles for the greater good and protect our wildlife from rubbish pollution!

How does it work?

There are different operators for the state of Victoria and each operator has their own smartphone app.  See below which app correlates to your zone:

  1. Download the app that relates to your zone. This will enable you to return your containers and to pass on your refund as a donation.

  1. Collect eligible drink containers. Look for the 10c mark on the label. Make sure not to crush them! Click here for more information about which containers are eligible.

  1. Find your local refund point. Head to the CDS website to locate your closest refund point and bring your recyclable containers.

  1. Recycle and donate. First search 'Wildlife Victoria’ under ‘charities’ in the app then scan the barcode at the machine. Then insert the bottles and cans and press finish to donate funds!

Every little bit helps.

Since the Container Deposit Scheme started in Victoria, we have received over $6,000 in donations. With people from all across the state donating their refunds to Wildlife Victoria, individual donations soon add up to make a significant impact. $6,000 is enough to cover the cost of delivering a Basic Rescue and Transport training course in a regional location to up to 25 new volunteers. Or $6,000 can buy specialist wildlife veterinary equipment that our Travelling Veterinary Service would use to treat animals in care at wildlife rehabilitation shelters.

This spoonbill (right) has a water bottle stuck on their beak. They're still mobile, so containing the bird is very difficult without specialist equipment and training. This year, due to a generous donation from a Wildlife Victoria supporter, we have been able to purchase net guns for our Travelling Veterinary Service, so our veterinary team is properly equipped to manage cases like these.

Thank you to everyone that has donated through the Container Deposit Scheme, or directly to Wildlife Victoria. Your donations, big or small, are making a difference.

If you have any questions or need some more info on the Container Deposit Scheme, head on over to the CDS website.
