Wildlife Victoria responds to Parliamentary Inquiry into Recreational Native Bird Hunting recommendations

August 31st, 2023

Today the Parliamentary Inquiry into Recreational Native Bird Hunting handed down eight recommendations to parliament. The first of which is a complete ban on recreational native bird hunting from 2024 on both public and privately owned land.

This is a monumental moment. The recommendations handed from the Select Committee to the Government today bring Victoria closer to a ban on duck and quail hunting than ever before.

To those incredible volunteers, who have spent decades on the wetlands of Victoria, amid gunshots, saving injured waterbirds, it’s you who’ve made this possible. It’s to you the state of Victoria that owes the most gratitude.

Wildlife Victoria will celebrate this day for years to come. Saving native birds from pain and suffering in the name of sport has been a long and grueling campaign, fought by many people on many fronts, many of whom have made significant sacrifices to get us where we are today.

“Wildlife Victoria is celebrating that today the future of our precious Victorian wildlife just got a little bit brighter.” Lisa Palma, Wildlife Victoria CEO

Wildlife Victoria applauds the Labor Government for establishing the Parliamentary Inquiry and thanks the Select Committee for their hard work over the past six months. Now we urge the Andrews Government to adopt the recommendations of the committee and to finally bring Victoria in line with other Australian states that have already banned this cruel and unnecessary practice.
