Reforms to the Wildlife Act 1975
The legislation overseeing wildlife protection in Victoria is governed by the Wildlife Act 1975. In 2021, the Wildlife Act 1975 and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986 both underwent review.
Both pieces of legislation are inadequate, and outdated. They need to be simplified, strengthened and enforced.
Wildlife Victoria made a substantial submission into the Wildlife Act 1975 review and made several recommendations for improvement. Read the full submission here.
As of October 2024, there has been no update from the Victorian Government on where the review process for the Wildlife Act currently stands.
