CORELLAS UNDER FIRE IN HORSHAM

DUCK SHOOTING SEASON March 21/22

STOP COMMERCIAL KANGAROO HARVESTING (Petition)

BOYCOTT

There are many issues affecting wildlife across Australia.  Many members feel very passionately about what is happening to our native animals. This page is for those who want to voice their dissatisfaction of the way wildlife is treated.  Through this page we will keep you informed of any campaigns and protests where wildlife needs your support.
Unfortunately Wildlife Victoria does not have the resources to always make the changes for wildlife we would like, but we offer our support in whatever way we can.  Sadly we don’t have the authority to stop culls, prosecute on cruelty cases, or have the commercial utilisation of wildlife abolished.  Wildlife Victoria will, wherever possible, support groups that lobby against these issues by informing our members and keeping the public informed via our website and other communication networks.  Wildlife Victoria will invite members to be part of a protest whether organised by Wildlife Victoria or by another group where our purposes and philosophies are aligned.
Wildlife Victoria plays a fundamental and leading role in wildlife rescue, care and rehabilitation in Victoria. Over the past 20 years we have fostered relationships on many levels that allow wildlife to be rescued in emergency responses, support wildlife carers with subsidies, be able to contribute to ongoing recognised training and operate a professional 24hr emergency phone call centre, the first point of call for wildlife assistance.  These are all integral elements for the ongoing rescue, care, rehabilitation and future of Victoria’s wildlife.
Wildlife Victoria supports many organisations including the Coalition Against Duck Shooting in being there with triage and vets on hand to care for injured waterbirds that would otherwise be left in the water to suffer and VAFA with their educational activism in getting bird netting out of the stores.
We also believe that everyone CAN make a difference, so if any of the following issues prompts you take action please feel free to do so and send an email or letter to express your thoughts on the matter. You can send your responses to local newspapers or the other parties involved.  You could also pass these onto your friends and contacts who may be interested within your email circles.
You may want to include some of the following points in your responses
•    Many methods of culling are inhumane.
•    Non lethal methods must be pursued.
•    Advocate for awareness and education as an essential aspect of assisting the public and property owners in living with wildlife.

CORELLAS TO BE DESTROYED IN HORSHAM
http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/02/04/2809715.htm
A permit for the destruction of 100 corellas is being sought by the Horsham Rural City Council from the DSE Horsham on the grounds they are damaging property and trees.
The corellas come every year to roost and nest in the old river redgums along the river in the town.
Fledgling corellas still require crop feeding from their parents and leaves them vulnerable to starvation or predation if their parents are killed.
To trap large numbers of corellas in nets through baiting and then sticking them into gas chamber bins of CO2 is not humane and would not be considered so by the general public if they knew this went on.
Nor is poisoning. Shooting would require an extremely good marksman to reduce wounding rate and ensure an immediate and humane death, learning to live with them would really be the best outcome.
Please let the Horsham Rural City Council that you do not agree with this proposed inhumane killing of native wildlife.
Please ask that non lethal methods be employed as they have successfully been in the past.

DUCK SHOOTING SEASON March 21/22

Your help is urgently required to ensure the 2010 recreational shooting of native waterbirds is cancelled as it was in 2007 and 2008, due to drought and low waterbird numbers.

A week before the start of the 2009 duck shooting season, hunters were caught illegally diverting water from the Latrobe River onto their private wetland – which was almost dry and held no birds. They needed birds because around 100 of their members had paid to shoot on the property on the opening weekend. Field and Game Australia’s
Gippsland Spokesperson, Gary Howard, pleaded guilty to taking water without a license and interfering with the flow in a river and was charged in Sale Magistrates’ Court on June 23 this year.

Please email Premier John Brumby

Primarily Mr Brumby needs to hear from Victorians (provide your address) saying that this brutal, unsustainable activity must be stopped.

Interstate and overseas supporters could say that Victoria should follow the other Labor states which have banned duck-shooting and that because birds fly across state borders the issue is now one of national environmental significance.

If you want to go into more detail there are some points below, but please use your own words.
•    Native waterbird numbers across eastern Australia have dropped 82% over the past 26 years and Victorian waterbird numbers dropped a massive 60% in just one year - between 2007 and 2008.
•    One in four birds are wounded.
•    Labor governments in WA (1990), NSW (1995) and Queensland (2005) have banned the Recreational shooting of native waterbirds.
•    An Oct. 2007 Morgan Poll showed that once respondents were informed of the above points, a huge 87% of Victorians wanted an end to duck shooting.
•    Duck shooting is now unsustainable due to drought, global warming and climate change.
•    According to an independent survey of shooters, 300,000 waterbirds were shot in Victoria in 2006, yet prior to the start of the shooting season DSE counted only approx. 84,000 birds on Victorian wetlands. (An extra 75,000 birds would have been wounded that year.)
•    Victoria’s Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (AWAC) has repeatedly called for an end to the activity on cruelty grounds.
•    Shooters pose as environmentalists like arsonists pose as fire fighters.
Please let us know when you have contacted Premier Brumby.
On behalf of the birds, thank you.
